Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra brings the magic of cinema to life at AFAS Dome.
On 9 May 2026, the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra took centre stage at AFAS Dome for the second Belgian edition of De Avond van de Filmmuziek — an evening entirely dedicated to the power of music on the big screen.
Under the baton of Alexandra Arrieche, the orchestra brought some of cinema’s most memorable scores to life, turning Belgium’s largest indoor arena into one giant movie theatre for the night.
From the cinema screen to the concert stage
With a full symphony orchestra performing live while iconic scenes unfolded on the big screen, the audience was invited to experience familiar films from a completely different perspective. Because sometimes, it only takes a few notes to bring an entire cinematic world back to life.
Film music has a unique ability to tell a story without words. A melody can create tension, trigger emotion or instantly transport an audience back to a particular scene.
During De Avond van de Filmmuziek, that music moved from the background into the spotlight. The Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra performed music from films including Mission: Impossible, Superman, How to Train Your Dragon, American Beauty and 12 Years a Slave, among others.
The combination of a full orchestra, choir Fine Fleur, cinematic images and the scale of AFAS Dome gave these familiar soundtracks a new dimension.

Throughout the evening, the orchestra was joined by several special guests, each connecting live performance with the world of film.
Ella Taylor performed music from Babygirl and The White Lotus, while Ibe Wuyts joined the orchestra for Dancing in the Dark. Stef Kamil Carlens performed Mad World, Klaasje Meijer appeared for Gabriel’s Oboe, and Tinne Oltmans took on Defying Gravity from Wicked.
Together with the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra, these performances showed just how broad the world of film music can be, moving from intimate and emotional moments to some of cinema’s most powerful themes.
The sound behind the story
For the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra, De Avond van de Filmmuziek is another example of the orchestra’s versatility.
Whether performing pop, rock, dance or film music, the orchestra continues to explore how symphonic music can reach audiences far beyond the traditional concert hall.
At AFAS Dome, the musicians became the sound behind some of cinema’s most recognisable stories, only this time, the soundtrack was no longer in the background.
